Director of Music: The First Presbyterian Church of Rome, NY is seeking a Director of Music. The candidate would lead and direct choirs; vocal and hand bell, during musical performances. They are responsible for scheduling rehearsals, selecting appropriate musical pieces, and managing their allotted budget. We seek a gifted musician who is able to work with children and adults in both traditional and contemporary styles. Excellent keyboarding skills required and basic organ helpful. The position requires flexibility. Salary commensurate with experience and talents

POSITION DESCRIPTION – MUSIC DIRECTOR
June 2022

Mission: Advise on the development of a comprehensive music program in consultation with the Pastor. To provide choral music for church services, and supervise the music program of the church

Accountability: Accountable to the Session through the Personnel Committee with supervision from the Pastor

Duties:

  1. Direct Senior Choir
    1. Lead weekly Senior Choir Rehearsals (usually held on Wednesday evenings)
    2. Select Senior Choir Anthems in consultation with Pastor and Church Organist
    3. Lead short preparatory rehearsal of Senior Choir at 9:30 a.m. before Sunday Worship Service
    4. Conduct weekly Sunday worship service presentation of the Senior Choir (one Sunday service at 10 a.m. except July and August)
  1. Direct Hand Bell Choir, Youth Choir
    1. Advise volunteer directors (if any) and all accompanists.
    2. Coordinate Sunday service presentations of these respective choirs in consultation with the Pastor
    3. Maintain equipment/supplies as required
    4. Lead weekly Bell Choir Rehearsals (usually held on Wednesday evenings) / Youth Choirs as needed
  1. Communication and consultation with the Organist for all service music. Provide sufficient keyboard skills to play hymns and lead the choir in the organist's absence.
  1. Supervise and coordinate occasional Sunday presentations of vocal soloists, vocal groups, and instrumentalists, and arrange for such special music during the months of July and August when regular choirs do not perform
  1. Plan and coordinate annual Christmas concert (Candlelight) in which all the church choirs participate (usually held on a Sunday afternoon in mid-December)
  1. Maintain church music library and order music as appropriate.
  1. Approve and supervise the use of other special instruments. (Harp, electronic keyboard, others)
  1. Coordination with the Worship and Music Committee, especially to:
    1. Assist in the development and expenditure of the music budget
    2. Assist in the recruitment of volunteer choir directors and accompanists
    3. Assist in the recruitment of all choir members
    4. Assist in the preparation of an annual report on the music program for the congregation

Provisions:

  • Annual review with the Pastor and the Personnel Committee;
  • Vacation:  4 weeks.  In the event of other absences, the music director will find a substitute and be responsible for that person’s compensation.
  • Continuing education funds available as arranged with the Pastor
  • Well-equipped choir room, bell choir room, and music library
  • Administrative assistance available from Church Secretary
