Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost Worship Service

Chief priests and elders confront Jesus in the temple, asking, “By what authority are you doing these things?”  Because His actions—cleansing the temple, teaching, and performing miracles—challenged their control over religious life and the temple economy. Jesus responds with a counter-question about John the Baptist’s baptism, asking whether it was from heaven or from men. Their inability to answer exposes that they feared the crowd’s opinion and were unwilling to acknowledge God’s work through John. This exchange emphasizes that Jesus’ authority comes directly from God, not from human institutions.
